A landmark paper in Periodontics from Saveetha University

A landmark paper in Periodontics
from Saveetha University
Sub: Laying down guidelines for Autologous platelets concentrate treatment in Periodontics-a review

“Cochrane” refers to a global independent network of researchers, professionals, patients, and people interested in health. Cochrane contributors, from more than 120 countries, work together to produce credible, accessible health information that is free from commercial sponsorship and other conflicts of interest. The work published in Cochrane is recognized as representing an international gold standard for high quality, trusted information. Moreover, the Cochrane stands out with its published systematic reviews with an esteemed impact factor of 5.940.
The Cochrane contributors are involved in gathering and summarizing the best evidence from research to help its audience and make informed choices about treatment. The mission of Cochrane is to provide accessible, credible information to support informed decision-making for improving global health.  Cochrane evidence provides a powerful tool to enhance the healthcare knowledge and decision making.
As access to health evidence increases, so do the risks of misinterpreting complex content; meanwhile the likelihood of any one person getting a complete and balanced picture decreases. The mission of Cochrane is to provide this complex information in the form of high quality systematic reviews which are updated in a timely basis by the contributors, to support informed decision-making and evidence based interventions which would result in improved global health.
Cochrane's contributors are affiliated to the organization through Cochrane groups: healthcare subject-related review groups, thematic networks, groups concerned with the methodology of systematic reviews, and regional centres. One of such group held in INDIA is Cochrane Oral Health Group. We feel proud to be the part of this group with our contribution towards the same.

The author team lead by Dr. Saurav Panda, Professor Sheeja Varghese, Professor Malaiappa Sankari, Professor N. D. Jayakumar and Dr. Surendar Ramamoorthi from Saveetha University, India, with the collaboration of Dr. Massimo Del Fabbro from UniversitĂ  degli Studi di Milano and his colleagues, Dr. Valentina Ceresoli, Dr. Caterina Ceci  and Dr. Silvio Taschieri from University of Milan IRCCS Galazzi Orthopaedic Institute, contributed a high quality gold standard  systematic review on “Autologous Platelet Concentrates in treatment of Periodontal Defects”.

We, the team of Periodontology at Saveetha Dental college Dr. Saurav Panda, Prof. Sheeja Varghese, Prof. Malaiappa Sankari, Prof. N. D. that adds a star to the path breaking success achieved by the students at Saveetha University in the publication field.

Autologous Platelet Concentrates contains a multitude rich in the growth factors that can modulate wound healing and its response in hard and soft tissues. To advocate this, the patient's own blood is taken and the platelet layer is used for the periodontal treatment of soft and hard tissue defects. The alpha granules of platelets contain a range of growth factors like PDGF, TGFb, EGF, VEGF, IGF, FGF, HGF that have shown an accelerated growth when used in periodontally compromised cases. The aim of the compiled evidence based systematic review was to determine whether the use of autologous platelet concentrates could affect the outcome of regenerative procedures for the treatment of periodontal defects and gingival recession.
